Jews of Libya lived in cities, farms, and villages, including some who lived in caves. The two major communities were in Benghazi and Tripoli, the former much smaller than the latter. The Jews of Benghazi and Tripoli lived among the Arabs and Europeans; in Tripoli some of the Jews lived in a Jewish quarter ("Hara"). The Libyan synagogues were comparatively large and elaborate.
